A/N: In the interest of doing this exercise as wrongly as possible, my last MEME entry is a seven hundred word three-prompt combo. 233.3333333 words each for Unresolved Sexual Tension, Humor and Fluff. Aluminum Mug (as opposed to Tin Cup)

Ennis wasn’t in the mood for more golf lessons. Rob had tried. Troy had tried. Fail and more fail. He just wasn’t a golfer, and he was ok with that. Unfortunately, Jack wasn’t.

I’m not that patient, and it’s late and I’ve done 5 of the 10 prompts. I’m writing mine to A Little Something Extra. They are in chronological order. S.

First Time

I didn’t think it was ever going to happen, even after I finally realized you wanted it as much as I did. I almost gave up hoping, because of who you are, how complicated your life is. I still can’t believe you’re here now, in my house, in my bed. I know it can’t last for long, but sweet Jesus.... Missing Scene

Dawn came, and Jack tiptoed from Ennis’ room. He had an early call leading into a long day, then a five-hour flight to LA when the only place he wanted to be come nightfall was back here, making love with Ennis, then falling asleep in his bed. The timing couldn’t be worse, and he knew if they had their way, there was a good chance things here would get fucked all to hell. Ennis would have to trust him, but that was a lot to ask this early.

A Little Something Extra - Chapter 14, Pt 5 - Trading Places

They moved to the kitchen. Ennis made a big pot of Irish Creme coffee, insisted that everyone who was driving had plenty of that with their brownies a la mode. Josh broke out the Baileys and poured a big dollop in his coffee. Since he wasn’t driving, it didn’t matter.

As they were finishing up their dessert, Laurie got a call on her cell phone, some friends asking her to go out late-night bar-hopping. They came in, met Jack and ogled him for a few minutes while they made small talk, but soon were ready to go. When they left, the party in general began to break up and in just a few minutes, everyone was gone but Josh, Jack and Melissa. They got busy in the kitchen, clearing away the dishes and leftovers from dinner, chatting easily about nothing special.

When they were done, Ennis poured the last glass of wine from one bottle, Melissa from another. Ennis looked at her funny. “You’re not still drinking and planning to drive, are you?”

She grinned happily. “Nope. Think I’m just gonna crash on your sofa tonight. I don’t have to work tomorrow.” She elbowed him slyly. “You don’t mind, do you?”

Ennis shook his head. “Course not. You know you’re always welcome.” What could he say? He wasn’t sure what to do about Jack. Now that he knew Jack was leaving for several days, he really didn’t want to spend this last night alone, but what were his options?

They all moved slowly to the living room, stood around looking at each other, the first trace of awkwardness tainting the atmosphere. Melissa smiled, the mischief in her eyes totally outweighing the innocent look on her face, and flopped down longways on the sofa. Josh took his drink to a big arm chair, sat down and propped his feet up on the ottoman. Ennis and Jack stood at the end of the sofa, near Melissa’s feet. Everyone was watching everyone else. Jack studied his audience – Josh, then Melissa – then turned to Ennis. “So these are your best friends, huh Ennis?”

Ennis dug one hand in his pocket, nervous all of a sudden, took a sip of his wine and nodded. “Yep,” he answered, staring at the floor.

“What do you think the chances are that we fooled ‘em?” Jack asked casually, in his normal speaking voice, keeping no secrets from the others.

Ennis looked up, met his gaze. “Probably not real good.”

Ennis followed Jack’s gaze from Melissa to Josh. They were both watching avidly – Jack had definitely commanded the stage for this performance. Ennis looked back to Jack. Jack took another sip of his drink, still at ease, like nothing earth-shattering was going on. “Yeah, I don’t think so either,” he said, talking only to Ennis but loud enough for them to hear, “and I’m tired of trying, and I sure as hell ain’t leaving.” He moved closer, dropped his voice just a bit. “So I’m gonna go upstairs and get ready for bed, ok? You tell them whatever you want ‘em to know, but don’t take forever – I’ve got an early call in the morning and it’s getting late. Ok?”

Ennis’ heart had kicked into overdrive as soon as he’d realized what Jack was going to say. You could hear a pin drop when he got done talking. Ennis nodded. “’K..... I won’t be long.”

“Better not be.......” Jack whispered, leaned in and pressed a soft, lingering kiss on his parted lips, letting it last just long enough to light a fire in Ennis’ belly before he slowly pulled away. He looked back to Josh and Melissa, lifted his hand in a casual wave. “Night guys. It was nice meetin’ you.... hope to see you again sometime.”

Melissa and Josh were looking mostly shocked, but Melissa did manage a strangled, “Night Jack – you too.” Josh just nodded, gave him a little wave back. Jack whipsered “Good luck,” to Ennis, winked and headed up the stairs. Melissa pulled in her feet and made a spot for Ennis on the sofa, pointed at it sternly in case he had any ideas about making a break for it. From the looks on their faces, he had some serious explaining to do. He flopped down into the empty spot on the sofa, said, “Ok guys. You’ve got thirty minutes. Fire away.”

A Little Something Extra - Chapter 14, Pt 4 - Dinner Conversation

They ate appetizers in the kitchen, everyone gathered around the big, granite island, laughing and talking while they ate, the beer and wine loosening them up considerably around their new friend the movie star.

Jack was a big hit with everybody – no surprise there – and he treated them like he’d known them forever. Anyone who didn’t know any better could easily mistake him for one of their regulars. Ennis wished he was, was wanting it more and more with every minute they spent together, but he knew it wasn’t going to be that way, so he squashed the desire whenever he felt it welling. There was no point in hankering for what he could never have.

After a bit, Jack asked, licking his fingers between words, “What’s this stuff you put on the sausage, Ennis? It’s really good.”

Ennis held up the black-capped bottle of dark red seasoning that was sitting on the counter. “It’s dry bar-be-que sauce. The Rendezvous uses it on their sausage and ribs. They sell it at the grocery stores around here. Want me to get you some?”

“Yeah, that’d be great. I want to take some with me when I go home. My friends are gonna love it,” Jack said, but Ennis saw a shadow pass through his eyes, probably akin to the shadow passing over his heart at the thought of Jack going home, back to his old friends and his old life, no longer a part of his.

“’K.... I’ll get you a couple of bottles,” Ennis promised, but thinking about it made him sad, and he didn’t want Jack to know, so he pushed away from the island and started getting things out of the ‘fridge to finish their dinner.

The rest of the group ate and talked for a while longer, eventually taking their drinks and wandering back out to the deck when Ennis sent Josh out to start grilling their steaks. Ennis was by himself in the kitchen, separating eggs at the sink, when he heard stealthy feet scuffing across the tile behind him. “What’s that?”

“It’s like the Hollandaise sauce that was on your eggs benedict the other day – the yellow stuff – only it’s got tarragon in it.” Jack nodded, like he cared, and continued to watch for a couple more minutes, till Melissa came and drug him away, demanding he tell them some juicy Hollywood gossip. With Jack gone, Ennis was finally able to refocus..... he quickly finished with the eggs.

Rob and Troy were still standing at the island, not even pretending to snack anymore, looking at him like he’d grown two heads when he turned around. It was obvious they hadn’t gotten over the babe comment yet. Ennis laughed. “Jesus guys – I was just kidding, ok?? I was fucking with Josh. I’m not fixin’ to start hitting on you, Rob... you can relax your sphincter!”

Relief washed over both their face, before they laughed and started making jokes about it, like they’d known all along. Ennis just shook his head. Whatever....... this was shaping up to be a really strange evening.

The crowd was loud and rowdy, and mostly tipsy, Ennis too, by the time they all finally sat down at the dinner table, plates loaded down with steak and potatoes – both Irish and sweet - green beans, and grilled French bread with garlic butter. There was a basket of more bread in the center of the table, and random bottles of wine all around. The chandelier overhead was turned low, and Ennis had switched on the tall lamps sitting at either end of the buffet table for ambience.

The first few minutes were quiet – just music playing in the background and happy eating noises. Even though they’d gone through the appetizers like a swarm of locusts, they were still ravenous. After the first few bites were swallowed, a little more wine down the hatch too, the conversation started back up, flowing easily from one to the other around the room. Troy, recovered at last from the trauma of Ennis calling Rob babe, called down to him from the opposite end of the table. “Hey Ennis, you’re playing with us in my golf tournament, right? It’s coming up in just a few weeks.”

Golf was not Ennis’ thing by a long shot, but Troy’s company put on an annual tournament for Lebonheur, and he’d been playing with Rob and Troy in it for years now. He nodded, swallowed his bite of steak. “Sure, I guess so. Who’s our fourth?”

Rob got a funny look on his face. Uh-oh. Ennis was not in the mood for a repeat of last year. The tournament was a four man scramble – last year they’d brought a guy from Rob’s work named Gaylord, of all things, and he’d lived up to his name in every obnoxious respect. He’d lorded it over them all that he was gay and out there, and then once he’d found out Ennis was gay, which coincided with his third Jack and Coke, he proceeded to fondle him openly for the last five holes of the round. Ennis had been seriously tempted more than once to shove his putter right up Gaylord’s nasty ass, but he was pretty sure that went against all the rules of golf etiquette and he didn’t want to get Rob in trouble. Gaylord was above him in the company hierarchy, so he had to make nice.

Ennis brought out his fiercest expression, pointed a stern finger at Rob. “I am not playing with that pompous asshole again. No Fucking Way!!! You'll have to find somebody else.”

Rob shook his head, looking worried. “Then you have to find your own partner, Ennis. He asked about you, and I told him I was pretty sure you had somebody else lined up. He was disappointed.”

Ennis could see Jack paying attention as the conversation went from him to Rob and back. “Shit, Rob! I don’t think I even know anybody else that plays golf.”

“I’m sorry, Ennis. He asked me about it and it just caught me off guard. How can you not know anybody that plays golf? Everybody plays golf!” Everybody in Rob’s world played golf, but Ennis’ world was totally different. Restaurant people didn’t golf, they partied.

Jack spoke up. “Yeah Ennis. Even I play golf.”

Ennis turned to Jack. “You?” That was unexpected.

“Yeah me! Why do you say it like that?”

Ennis shrugged. “Just surprised I guess. I never read anything about you playing golf.”

Jack grinned and waggled his eyebrows suggestively. “God Ennis - I hope you’ve never read about a lot of the shit I’ve done!” That earned Jack some laughs and a few oohs and aahs around the table. Great.

“Hey Jack – that’d be sweet if you could play with us. Why don’t you be Ennis’ partner?” Troy suggested. It would be a total coup for him to have a celebrity on his team, since he’d drawn the short straw this year and gotten stuck organizing the tournament. Ennis had been listening to him bitch about it for weeks.

Jack looked from Troy back to Ennis, grinning. “Cause Ennis hasn’t asked me.”

Shit! They could barely make it through one dinner without blowing it. How would they survive six hours in a little bitty cart, drinking beer, talking about balls and sticking it in, bending over and shoving their asses up in each others face every five minutes. This was probably not a very smart idea. “Are you even any good?” Ennis asked, as if that mattered. Jack couldn’t be any worse than him.

Jack looked offended. “Are you?”

Ennis was honest. “No! I suck!”

Jack grinned again and waggled his eyebrows some more. “Well I suck, too... Probably better than you, though......”

Fuck him. Two could play this game. Ennis propped his elbows on the table, leaned in a little closer. “Are you saying you think you suck better than me, or you golf better than me?”

He may as well have said he’d give a million dollars to the person who could shut their mouth the fastest. Silence slammed down on the table like a giant feather fist.

Jack didn’t care. He took a sip of his wine, studying him, maybe for signs of insanity. “Guess you’ll have to play with me and find out, won’t you?”

“You got your clubs in town?”

Jack shook his head, never losing eye contact. “Nah. I’ll get ‘em when I go home.”

“When’s that? Maybe we should have a practice round. If ya’ll both suck really bad, I could add a prize for last place – give us something to shoot for,” Troy suggested helpfully.

Jack’s mood seemed to change in an instant. He looked down at his plate, forked a green bean. “I’m going home this weekend, actually.”

Shit! That was the first Ennis had heard about him being gone for the weekend. Even though he’d have to be at the restaurant every night, he’d let himself imagine Jack in his bed when he got home. He was only going to be here for a little while anyway.... Ennis hated the idea of even that time getting cut short. And he had his weekend in Asheville coming up too.... they wouldn’t be together then either.

“So when are you leaving?” Melissa asked, covering the awkward silence that had fallen between them. Ennis knew she knew.... They were so fucking obvious it wasn’t even funny.

“Tomorrow after work. My flight leaves at 7:30.” Jack ate the bean still dangling from his fork, looking forlorn. They really needed to move on.

Troy, oblivious to their mood, spoke up. “I’ve got a great idea, Jack. Maybe you could bring us back an autographed picture – you know, something framed up nice.... We could give it away as a prize!”

The golfers would love that! Ennis snorted. “Oh yeah! That’d be great - definitely the prize I’m going for!”

Jack had been gaping at Troy like he was nuts, but he rounded on Ennis quickly, eyes bright, grinning again, back in the game. “Don’t you worry about having to win a picture of me, Ennis. I got something special I’m bringing back for you – an autographed picture of my ass!”

The image of that flooded Ennis’ brain – the wine he’d been drinking all evening making it harder than normal to recover. Luckily, Hank was following along with the conversation. He exploded with excitement at the mention of such a picture. “Ooooh!! Oh my God!!! Do you really have one of those??? I’d just love to have one, Jack. I’ve got an autograph collection, and I just adore ass art! That picture would be my Prize Piece, I can already tell. Could you bring me one too, please?”

Jack’s eyes were big as saucers, his grin stupefied. Laurie and Melissa, laughing hysterically on either side of Hank, shot their hands straight up in the air. “Us too. We love your ass too!” they chanted, not slurring too badly, considered the wine and their uncontrollable giggles. This party was definitely getting out of hand.

“Oh, and you should probably bring one for Josh, too,” Hank added shyly, like this was really going to happen. Jack tongued the side of his cheek, looked thoughtfully from Hank to Josh, back to Ennis.

What the hell, they were a fucking lost cause anyway. Ennis shook his head. “Nah, Josh’ll want the one of his dick. Josh is a dick man, you know.”

Josh made some sarcastic noises about that, most everyone else was laughing, Jack had buried his face in his hands – hiding - but Carlton piped up, out of the blue, with a question. Carlton was their one tried and true, straight as an arrow, heterosexual guy friend, who came to all their parties and took part in all their weirdness. Troy and Rob didn’t count, because they were suspect. Carlton even had a girlfriend, although she hadn’t come tonight.

“How do you guys decide you like that anyway – getting f’...... ummm... I mean, ummmm..... having sex back there? I mean, seems to me like that would just have to hurt... ” Carlton was quiet and shy for the most part, had to drink a lot to get even a little bit wild and crazy. This was a serious question. His face was red as a fire truck – if they threw water on him, he’d probably make steam. The table went quiet as a church. Uh-oh, time for the host to step in.

“Umm.... well Carlton,” Ennis started, then cleared his throat and took a sip of his wine. Jack grabbed the bottle and topped off his almost empty glass. “I’m not really a good person to talk about that – we should probably defer to our expert here....” Ennis said.

Without fail, they all looked at Jack.

It took Jack a few seconds to notice, then he went into Innocent Mode with a vengeance. “What the fuck are ya’ll all looking at me for?” he asked, palms up, mouth open incredulously. “I’m just here for the food!”

More host duties. “Come on guys, ya’ll leave Jack alone now. As far as we’re concerned, he’s straight. He’s never said he’s gay – that’s just a rumor. And so that whole thing about him taking it up the ass is just a rumor about a rumor!!! We don’t know for sure that any of that’s true!!”

Jack had been looking down at his plate, lips clamped tight to keep from laughing, but he looked up when Ennis finished his little speech. “Thanks for clearing all that up, Ennis. That was very convincing!”

Ennis nodded. “No problem,” he said to Jack, then turned back to the group as a whole. “What we do know is that Josh here,” he pointed at Josh sitting at the other end of the table, “is a certified eggspert at takin’ it up the backside! He needs to be the one to speak to this tissue.” That sounded weird. “Issue – sorry!”

Ennis held out his hand again, pointing toward the end of the table, sent their heads swiveling obediently towards Josh. Carlton was looking very concerned. Jesus! Was everybody turning fucking gay??

“Hah! If I’m the expert, Ennis, you’re the fucking anti-expert, that’s for damn sure. You guys never heard so much carrying on in all your life as the one time Ennis here took it up the pooper shooter!” Josh threw it out there, all casual, like no one would bat an eye. "It was fucking embarrassing!"

Jack stared at him, batting both eyes, several times, to the point Ennis was worried he might be developing a tic. “Is he serious?? You let him fuck you?”

Jesus! The expression on Jack’s face didn’t scream mad, or even jealous, but it conveyed fairly clearly that his chances of getting out of letting Jack fuck him too had just gone down dramatically. Fucking Josh and his big fucking mouth. The rest of the table was equally surprised – somehow they must’ve kept this a secret, although that was hard to believe.

Melissa was the first to get her mouth in gear, no surprise there. “Oh my God, Ennis! I can’t believe you never told me about that. What in the world were you thinking?”

“I just wanted to know what all the fuss was about. He had to get me really drunk to do it,” Ennis said, looked at Jack when he said it. Jack thoughtfully topped off the empty inch of his wine glass. Ennis picked up his glass, lifted it in a silent, sloshy toast, then looked back at Carlton. “And it hurt like a fucking son of a bitch. I totally do not recommend it.”

“Hey!” Josh shouted out, like he was offended, but Ennis knew he wasn’t sensitive about it or he’da never brought it up. “You have to relax, Ennis. I kept telling you to relax, but fuck no, you were tight as Dick’s Cock Ring. What the fuck did you expect?”

“You’re supposed to make me relax, Casanova! Just tellin’ a person isn’t good enough.” He turned back to Carlton. “It felt like I was getting fucked with a rhinoceros horn.” Carlton’s blush was gone – he was actually looking rather pale.

Jack snorted, and there were snickers all around. Josh, whose ego was way stronger than any insult Ennis could fling his way, especially about a really bad fuck ten years ago when they were both new and clueless, responded confidently. “It wasn’t that bad, Ennis. “Josh!! Don’t get carried away, ok! It might’ve been scary, but it wasn’t a monster.” Pause. “It just felt like one!” Ennis turned back to Carlton. “Carlton, if you’re thinking about going gay, trust me - be a top! It's totally the way to go. It never hurts – it does get a little messy sometimes, but all that shit washes right off and then you're good as new!” Ennis grinned evilly at his play on words. Carlton shuddered, looking squeamish. The girls were freaking out... "Oooooh gross!!"

It was definitely time to move on. “Now, before we get any more disgusting, let’s go back to the kitchen and have some of Melissa's yummy brownies, shall we?”

A Little Something Extra - 14, Pt 3 - Grillin' Sausages

“So – is that him?” Josh asked, perched himself on the deck railing that ran right behind the large, stainless steel grill where Ennis was just starting to cook the smoked sausages.

Un-fucking-believable! “Him who?” Ennis asked, totally out of patience with this line of questioning.

“Him your mystery lover....”

Ennis followed Josh’s gaze to where Jack was standing, laughing at some wild tale Troy and Rob were spinning. Ennis wasn’t sure if Josh was genuinely jealous or just pissed because he was keeping a secret from him. He hoped it was the secret thing.

“Which one?” Ennis asked blandly.

Josh turned back to him, looking confused. “Huh?”

“Which one do you mean? Which one of ‘em do you think I’m gettin’ it on with?” Ennis cocked an eyebrow at Josh, then looked back at the trio of handsome men. They were all pretty damn good looking.

Jack was.... of course – Jack.... Webster could stick his picture in the dictionary next to the word perfection and everyone would know exactly what he meant. Perfect face, perfect hair, perfect smile, perfect body.... he was everything that was beautiful as far as Ennis was concerned.

But Troy and Rob were no slouches in the looks department either. Troy was Ennis’ height, a bit more muscular, with thick blond hair that he wore longer than the average architect. He already had a nice tan, Ennis noticed, wondering how he’d come by that.... It was way too early for a tan in Memphis.... Was he going to a tanning salon? That wasn’t very heterosexual....... Rob was Troy’s perfect foil, with coal black hair cut short and dark olive skin. He stood about an inch shorter than Jack but was built like a brick shithouse. Ennis knew he worked out several times a week, took lots of supplements and drank protein shakes like they were going out of style. From the look of his body, packed with muscle, it was paying off. And the cut of his jeans emphasized a nice package too.... How had he never noticed any of that before?

Josh considered the three of them for a minute, then turned back to Ennis. Ennis kept his head down, his eyes on the grill, tending the sausages which were just starting to get a little color.

“Jack, of course.”

“Why of course? They’re all three pretty hot if you asked me. Troy’s been working out.... look at his arms, how built up his shoulders are..... And Rob’s ass is just made for fucking. Personally, I wouldn’t kick any of ‘em out of bed.” Ennis grinned down at his sausages. “Theoretically speaking, of course.” He didn’t want to piss Josh off too bad.... He had basically kicked him out of bed the night before – no point in rubbing his nose in it.

“Yeah right, what the fuck ever, Ennis....” Josh took a sip of his beer, openly studying the men in question. “You know, I’m not so sure about Troy and Rob. They keep sayin’ they’re straight.... I’m beginning to think maybe they are.”

Ennis looked over his shoulder, caught Jack’s eye for just a second. He was keeping tabs on them.... great. “Jack says he’s straight too,” Ennis countered.

Josh laughed. “Yeah, but everybody knows that’s a lie. That’s just a cover to protect his career.”

“You think so, huh?”

Josh shrugged. “Sure.”

“Why don’t you make a pass at him, then? Test it out.”

That got Josh’s attention. He turned back to Ennis. “What?”

“If you’re so sure he’s gay, go make a pass at him. Maybe you’ll get lucky – kinda make up for last night....” Ennis suggested earnestly.

“Yeah right! What would we do, anyway? Word is, he likes to get fucked too.”

“Since it’s all just one giant rumor anyway, who knows what he really likes. Maybe they got it wrong. “Great. Good luck.”

Josh jumped down from the deck railing where he’d been sitting, headed over to join in the guys’ conversation. Ennis turned sideways so that he could watch the action and keep an eye on the food. Josh walked up.... after a minute, they stopped talking and he said something, held up his beer..... They all looked at theirs, and Jack and Roy nodded. Josh took their bottles, delivered fresh ones from the tub. Ennis heard some thank-you’s, then Josh was back. He stood right beside him, watching him cook.

“Trying to wait your way into his heart?” Ennis teased.

“Shut the fuck up, Ennis.... He’s not really my type, anyway.... I’ll leave him for you.”

“Oh yeah - right! You can’t get up the nerve to hit on him, but you think I can?”

“Maybe he’s hittin’ on you....”

“Un-huh! Like that’s gonna happen. If he is gay, he’s worked his ass off to keep it a secret. Why the hell would he want to take a chance now with some nobody like me?” Good question.......

Josh let his eyes drift down from Ennis’ face to his fly. He licked his lips.... “’Cause you got a really nice.....”

“Josh, for God’s sake!” Ennis interrupted, wanting to derail that line of talk immediately, but he was too late. Suddenly she was there, and she’d never let it rest.

“Hey guys! What’re ya’ll talkin’ about all quiet and secretive over here?” Melissa asked, appearing out of nowhere, pressing between them, looking from one to the other, grinning. Ennis kept his eyes on the grill - the sausages were smelling good, skin just starting to split, spitting juices back into the fire – they were getting close.

“Ennis’ cock....” Josh told her nonchalantly, like that was a totally normal thing to be talking about. He backed away from the grill, hopped back up on the railing and took a hit off his beer.

“Jesus, Josh.......” Ennis groaned.

Melissa smiled. “Oh yeah, baby, too bad for you. This won’t last forever, though.... You’ll get him back eventually,” she promised, gave Josh a reassuring pat on the knee.

“Yeah, but I was expectin’ some now, you know.... Who knows when we’ll even get to see each other again?” Josh grumbled.

“Jesus Josh! It’s not like I’ve got the only dick in town!”

“Yeah, but you’ve got the one I like!”

Ennis saw movement out of the corner of his eye – Jack had broken away from Troy and Rob, was just steps away from gracing them with his presence. Fucking great.

“Hey guys.... What’s got ya’ll all looking so serious?” Jack asked, looking from one to the other, just a hint of concern on his face.

“Really wanna know?” Melissa asked, waggling her eyebrows, conspiracy rich in her voice.

“No he doesn’t!” Ennis said, but was completely overridden by Jack grinning and saying, “Sure! I asked, didn’t I?”

“It’s Ennis’ cock,” she confided solemnly.

Jack had just taken a sip of his beer. He turned his head just in time to spit it right back out onto the deck. “Shit! Sorry!” he sputtered, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “Guess I wasn’t expectin’ that.” He looked at Ennis, concern all over his face, except in his eyes. They were full of devilment. “What’s wrong with it?”

Melissa sucked in a breath, ready to answer. Ennis interrupted. “Do we really have to go into this dog and pony show for him, guys? Can’t we even pretend to be like normal people? Just for once?”

“Ennis.... you picked us for your friends. You know how we are.... What do you expect?”

“Fucking chaos, I guess,” Ennis muttered, shaking his head. He could see Jack’s interested grin out of his peripheral vision, knew he wouldn’t be backing out of the conversation any time soon. Ennis focused on the sausages he was rolling around on the grill, wishing that just once Scottie would pick up on his telepathic messages and beam him up. Melissa and Josh were totally insane and they fed off each other like crazy. They would say anything to anybody at anytime, and they certainly weren’t going to be making any exceptions for a visiting celebrity.... especially not when he was one of their prime suspects.

Melissa answered Jack’s question. “It’s Josh’s favorite sex toy, and it’s out of commission.”

Ennis looked down at Melissa’s angel-face. “I’m going to poison your dinner,” he told her matter-of-factly.

“You’ve been poisoning my food for years, sweetie. That’s what’s made me so crazy.” She grinned sweetly - Pollyfuckin’Anna with a glass of wine and a pilot’s license. Jesus!

Jack was obviously appalled. “No!”

“Yep – totally off the menu,” she continued sadly, shaking her head.

“Well, it wasn’t totally off the menu, but it got yanked pretty damn fast!” Josh complained, doing the woe-begone thing now, too. Fuck all of ‘em.....

“Geez.... that’s too bad, Ennis. You’re kinda young to be havin’ problems like that, but I bet your doctor can help you out, you know.... They make stuff for that these days...” Jack offered sympathetically.

Ennis met his eyes for an instant, but had to look away quickly because Jack was struggling not to laugh and that was the last thing they needed. “Thanks, Jack. I’ll keep that in mind.”

“It’s not that kinda out of commission. It still works, he’s just not sharing it these days,” Josh explained, eyeing Jack suspiciously.

“Oh....... that’s too bad.... I guess..... How come?” Jack asked.

“He’s got a secret lov-uuurrrrrr!” Melissa whispered loudly.

“Well that’s cool! Who is it?” Jack asked happily, totally into the spirit of the thing, huddling in closer to Ennis, talking across him to Melissa and Josh. Ennis stabbed another sausage with his fork..... it spit grease into the fire. Like him, just about done.

“He won’t tell us.... but I’ve got it narrowed down to some pretty likely prospects,” Josh confided. He slid down from the rail, joined in their huddle. Ennis wondered if he could get away with poking him with his fork accidentally.....

“You do?” Melissa had missed out on that part of the conversation.

“Mmm hmmm..... And they’re all here tonight.”

“Who?” she and Jack both asked.

Josh looked Jack straight in the eye. “Well, for starters, those two guys you were just talking to....” He indicated Rob and Troy with a nod of his head.

“Troy and Rob?” Jack asked, sounding surprised. “I didn’t know they were gay.”

“No one knows for sure, but we’ve always been suspicious,” Melissa explained. She turned to Josh. “I didn’t know Ennis was hot for either one of them, though.”

“Yeah.... seems like he’s been keeping lots of secrets from us.” They all three looked at him accusingly. Jesus H. Christ!!!

“Hmmmm...... So who else?” Melissa asked. Of course she did......

“Well hell, Melissa, who do you think? Jack, of course.”

“Me?” Jack asked, grinning, like he’d just won a fucking award or something.

“Of course you! You wouldn’t want to be left out, would you?” Ennis asked sarcastically.

Jack just grinned some more. “Guess not.” He took a swig of his beer, unconcerned.

“Troy and Rob, though? For real? Guess I just never knew you thought they were doable.” Melissa was having a hard time with that one. What the fuck... if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

“Sure they’re doable.... just check out Troy’s arms – he’s been working out, gotten really pumped up lately....” Ennis noted, using his most admiring voice.

They all looked at Troy, who was waving his arms around in conversation. Melissa nodded. “Mmmm.... yeah, they’re nice.... never realized you were an arm man either.....”

Ennis dropped his voice a husky octave. “And check out Rob’s ass.... that thang was just made for fuckin’.....” He made some growly noises deep in his throat for effect. That earned him a quick glare from Jack.

Rob, seemingly in the mood to cooperate, changed positions, stuck his ass out in their general direction. Melissa purred.... “Mmmmm – Ok, that is nice, Ennis..... How come we never noticed that before?”

“Who says I didn’t?”

“So what about Jack? What do you like about him?” Josh asked, peering across the grill at Jack. Melissa turned her attention back to him too. Ennis turned his head to ponder him. Jack looked back at them innocently, small smile playing around his perfect mouth. Ennis couldn’t wait to get him alone... he was gonna pay for his part in this torture, there was no doubt about that.

Ennis let his eyes rove over him slowly, over his well-developed chest stretching the soft white cotton of his t-shirt, down his flat stomach.... lingering over his crotch, then traveling down his long, strong legs.... Next time they fucked, hopefully later tonight – somehow - Ennis wanted to do him on his back, wanted to feel those legs wrapped around his waist, squeezing him tight while he wore that ass out. Ennis smiled, looked back up into Jack’s face. “His eyes, I think. I really like his eyes......”

Jack’s eyebrows shot up and the eyes in question got big. “My eyes?” Melissa and Josh just laughed. Ennis knew they weren’t fooled.

“Sure.... I think they’re real pretty.... In fact, my grandma had blue eyes.... Your eyes kinda make me think of her’s.”

Jack took a deep breath... Ennis could see he was having a hard time with the direction the conversation had taken.... too fucking bad! “So I remind you of your grandmother..... Is that what you’re saying?”

“Yeah... guess so.... ‘Fraid that pretty much puts you out of the runnin’... I can’t see myself puttin’ it to my sweet old Noni... That’d be worse than Winnie the Pooh.”

Jack’s eyes really got big at that. Just then, Rob hollered over, “Hey Ennis! That sausage is smellin’ sweet! Is it about ready?”

Ennis called back, “Yeah babe, let me just plate it up. Be ready in just a minute.” He winked at Jack, then headed for the kitchen, could hear Troy asking as he walked by, “Did he just call you babe?” Ennis recognized that tone... had been hearing it a lot lately himself. Maybe he and Jack weren’t the only ones whose secrets were dangerously close to coming out tonight.

A Little Something Extra - 14, Pt 2 - Party Time

Ennis hung up after leaving Jack the I’m having a party and you’re not invited message, feeling worse than before. The message sucked, but then the whole situation sucked. What the fuck was he supposed to say? He felt dumb enough calling at all, assuming that Jack might want to come back for the third night in a row, but he felt obligated to give him a head’s up, because in his heart he suspected Jack might show up if he didn’t warn him off..... Truth was, he really didn’t know what Jack was going to do next because he had no idea what the fuck was going on between them.

Ennis did his shopping as quickly as he could.... got apples and grapes and pineapple for a fruit and cheese tray, along with some wedges of brie and blue cheese, a hunk of sharp cheddar and another of baby Swiss. He looked at the stuff in the basket so far.... perfect for a ladies luncheon..... crap! After picking out several white and sweet potatoes to bake, he made a beeline for the meat section and got a couple of smoked sausages to grill. Guy food...... much better.

Then it was on to the freezer section for whole green beans to saute’.... crackers to go with the cheese and French bread that he’d grill with the steaks. Butter, eggs and lemons to make the Béarnaise sauce and he was set. At the last minute he grabbed a twelve pack of Diet Cokes and a couple of bottles of Mr. & Mrs. T. Bloody Mary mix... his headache was easing up. Maybe that rumor wasn’t just a rumor after all.

Back in his 4Runner, Ennis checked his phone for messages..... There were a couple, but none from Jack, which was what he was specifically hoping for. But what could Jack say? He’d basically told him he was having a party and he wasn’t invited...... not much to say to that. Shit! Ennis hit the send button again. Surely after four years of college and several more as a successful business man, he could think of something smoother to say than that........

Beep! “Jack... ummmm.... that last message I left you sounded pretty stupid, I guess, so I’m gonna try again. I got you a steak, and I’d like for you to come over tonight – if you want to. My friends’ll believe whatever I tell’em.... We met at the restaurant and I helped you find a place to live.... nothing so strange about that. It’ll be some gay guys and some straight guys, and Melissa and a girl friend. If you’re free and you want to stop by, that’ll be fine.... you’re welcome to come.”

Ennis pushed end, wasn’t sure if that sounded much better than the first message, but it was the best he could come up with under the circumstances, so it would have to do.

Back home, he and Josh unloaded the groceries and put everything away, then took Max for a long walk. Max had been loafing, saving up his energy for days – he’d be a maniac at the party if they didn’t do something to bleed off some of his extra enthusiasm. Afterwards, Josh showered and changed while Ennis moved the laundry along, then got the steaks to marinating. Josh made an ice run, was fixing the beer tub on the back deck when their friends started arriving. Ennis was finishing up the fruit and cheese tray in the kitchen when Melissa came in with her dessert.

“So, how’s it goin’, friend boy? Need any help?” she asked, gave him a peck on the cheek.

“No thanks.... I’m good. Where’s Laurie?”

“She’s coming in her own car – oughta be here in a few minutes.”

“Cool. What’d you bring?”

“Brownies and ice cream. They’re from a mix, but it’s Ghirardeli, so they’re awesome.”

“Sounds tasty.....”

Melissa put the ice cream in the freezer, asked over her shoulder. “Josh staying here tonight, huh?”

“Mmm hmmm......”

“Upstairs or downstairs?”

Why make small talk when you could jump right to the good stuff? “Down.”

“How come?”

“’Cause I’m fucking somebody else, remember? Give me a break..... I’m not in the mood for an inquisition tonight!”

“’K, sorry! So is he coming?”

“Who he?” he asked, although he knew who she meant, didn’t know why he was bothering to stall.... Like a good answer might possibly occur to him in the next three and a half seconds?

“You know...... your mystery man.....” She leaned up against him, grinning catily, sneaking bites of food off his tray.... too bad having a mouth full of food wouldn’t shut her up!

“If he did, then he wouldn’t be much of a mystery, now would he? Just leave it, Melissa...... Ok?”

“Ok fine!” she agreed, exasperated. “Does Josh know?”

“Yeah... he found a condom wrapper in my bedroom. I told him he’s just a fuck, but that I didn’t wanna mix it up.........”

“He bought that?”

“I guess.... It hurt his feelings some, but it’s better this way.” He hated hurting him, hated lying to him, but he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He and Josh had been fuck buddies for years, always available for each other unless they were involved in a committed relationship, which they both had been for the last few years. A piece of ass wasn’t a very good excuse to stand up a long time lover, but it was the best excuse he had to offer. Josh hadn’t liked it, but he’d let it go.... for now.

Melissa poured herself and Laurie a glass of wine, right on time, as Laurie joined them in the kitchen just as she was recorking the bottle. Laurie was tall and beautiful, a flight attendant for Northwest, and she and Melissa had been good friends for years. They gossiped and nibbled away at the tray while Ennis got the sausages out of the ‘fridge, slit open their packages and got them ready to cook. Just as he was finishing up, Hank came sliding into the kitchen, gawking at the girls. “You aren’t going to believe who’s walking up the sidewalk with a twelve pack of beer in his hand!”

Ennis knew exactly who it was from the look of amazement on Hank’s face, felt his heart drop into a heavier, hungrier beat just knowing he was on the premises.... that he was fixin’ to see him. Jesus! How the fuck was he going to get through a whole night of being with him and not touching him? Inviting him here had probably been a really bad idea. They’d gotten each other off five times in the last two days, but that had in no way taken the edge off his desire...... had just made him want him that much more.

Hank, who happened to be the flamiest guy in their crowd and a lifetime subscriber to People Magazine and all it’s wanna-be knock-offs, rushed out to the deck to give the other guys a heads up, then went dashing back out front to greet him. By the time Ennis had washed his hands, grabbed a fresh beer and sent a stern warning down to his private parts, he was the last one out on the porch. Melissa, Laurie and Hank were watching from the swing, with Hank sandwiched in the middle. Ennis took a closer look, saw that each girl had one of Hank’s wrists in a firm grip.... human restraints...... excellent.

Josh and the other guys were all standing around, drinking beer, trying to look normal but not pulling it off very well. Even the straight guys looked a little confused as they all stared stupidly at the handsome, dark haired man walking slowly, nonchalantly up the sidewalk.

Jack, for his part, was looking his casual hottest, wearing dark sunglasses and a bright white t-shirt which fit tight, but not too tight, scruffy brown leather boots and well cut jeans that showed off his long legs, almost seemed to emphasize his package...... Ennis could just imagine what they did for his ass....... Was he doing this on purpose? Was he trying to make him sweat?

Max had come out with Josh, not wanting to miss even a minute of the excitement. He spotted Jack immediately, and was, as usual, totally enchanted at Jack’s visit and not the least bit shy with his greeting. As Jack walked up the steps leading from the street sidewalk to Ennis’ walkway, Max galloped down the porch steps to greet him, barking ecstatically, slobber strings flying from both sides of his mouth.

Josh looked over at Ennis. “Is that who I think it is?”

Ennis took a long pull off his beer, swallowed hard, then pushed through the crowd, hoping like hell he could pull this off. “Yeah, it is. Ya’ll try to act normal, ok? He’s just a guy.......” then went down to greet him.

By the time he reached Jack, Max already had his full and undivided attention. Jack was laughing, squatting down, hands full of Max, holding him back from delivering the tongue bath Max so desperately wanted to give him. As always, Ennis had nothing but respect for Max’s brilliant ideas.

“Hey.... welcome to the party.”

Jack pulled his sunglasses off, hooked them in the vee neck of his shirt. He glanced up, but stayed crouched down on the sidewalk, canoodling with Max. “Hey. Thanks for inviting me. Finally.....” he added at the last, rolling his eyes.

Ennis blushed, turned his head away. “Sorry. I wasn’t sure what to do.....”

“It’s ok,” Jack said, talking mostly to Max, who was wiggling excitedly in response. “Glad you figured it out though. That first message kinda hurt my feelings.”

“Sorry.” Ennis looked back down, caught Jack looking at his crotch. He did that a lot when he played with Max.

“I see you’re wearing those same jeans from last night,” Jack noted, still looking straight at his dick, which was feeling every bit as wiggly and excited to see him as Max was.

“Yeah.... I’m behind on my laundry. How’d you know?”

Jack grabbed the box of beer, stood up. “’Cause they make your dick look fucking huge,” Jack told him, stuck out his hand for Ennis to shake.

Ennis felt himself blushing more, but he grinned back, switched his beer over and shook Jack’s hand. “It’s not the jeans, Jack. It’s you.....”Jack’s grin lit up a notch, but before he could speak, Ennis shook his head. “And there’s not a damn thing I can do about it right now, so don’t tease me, ok....... Come on and meet my friends.”

They followed Max back up to the house. Ennis stopped at the bottom of the steps, Jack right beside him. “Guys, this is Jack Twist... You might've heard, he’s in town making a movie. He’s eaten at my restaurant a couple of times and I helped him find a place to stay for the summer. Jack hasn’t had a chance to meet anybody around here yet, so I’m trying to be neighborly and show him a little Southern hospitality. Ya’ll try not to terrorize him too much.”

Ennis introduced them all, and to their credit, they handled it fairly well. Once they got over the unbelievability of Jack Twist showing up at Ennis’ house for a Wednesday night cookout, Jack’s charm and their own easy-going friendliness took over, and everything was fine.

Ennis took Jack’s twelve pack of beer out back and put it in the ice tub, left him on his own to field their first round of chatter. By the time Ennis got back out front, the initial excitement had settled. Ennis moved up beside him and handed Jack a beer. “I hope you’re not starvin’... we always end up eatin’ late at these things, but I’m gonna put some sausage on the grill as soon as the last two guys get here. They oughta be pullin’ up any minute.”

“That’s fine, Ennis.” Jack took a swig of his beer, scanned the group, then turned back to Ennis. “So is one of these guys him?”

Fuck! More of this already! “Him who?”

Jack rolled his eyes, mumured, “Him from last night, Ennis! Who the fuck do you think I’m talking about? My competition....”

Fucking great. No one was paying them any attention yet, or if they were they were being sly about it, but that wouldn’t last long if they got into it right there on the front porch. Jesus! Ennis leaned in to Jack, whispered, “Yeah, he’s here, but he’s not your competition, Jack. He’s just an old friend that I fuck sometimes. He knows it’s not happening this visit.”

Jack looked at him hard, blue eyes full of questions. “I won’t see him again till the fall. You’ll be gone by then.”

Jack just said, “Yeah,” made it sound like a curse. Melissa and Laurie joined them then, ending the conversation, not a moment too soon as far as Ennis was concerned. Jack could give Max lessons on the fucking woe-begone, sad-eyed puppy dog look. What the fuck did he expect – that he was going to retire his dick after this summer was over?

Ennis moved away, listened idly to the various conversations, sat on the half-wall of the porch drinking his beer, waiting. By unspoken mutual consent, the group hung around out front waiting for Troy and Rob. They didn’t have to wait long. Within minutes, Max sounded the alarm, and soon they could hear the rumble of Rob’s growly pick-up truck with the mud tires and the chrome roll bar. Sometimes they came in Troy’s late model Corvette. Regardless of how they got there, they always came together.

Troy and Rob were a complete enigma to the rest of the group. They’d been members of their fraternity, been roommates all through college, and were still inseparable eight years later. They’d both gotten good jobs right out of college, Troy as an architect, Rob as an engineer, and had quickly bought houses in the same neighborhood. From the outside, they looked like just a couple of good old boys..... they drank beer by the case and changed girlfriends about as often as they changed razors, but they remained best friends through it all.

Ennis, Josh and Melissa had whiled away many an hour trying to figure them out, but had never gotten one iota closer to knowing what was really going on between them. Troy and Rob maintained that they were just friends, seemed totally unconcerned that anyone might think different, which, in itself, was odd..... They went on hunting and fishing trips at least twice a year, watched football in the fall and played golf all summer long. They even took cruises together, sometimes with girlfriends, sometimes to chase girls, so they said.

They never did or said anything to give themselves away, but Ennis was still completely convinced that they were a couple. It was a mystery that had taken hold in their group years ago, and was even more interesting to Ennis now than ever before. How could they keep their cover so air tight? He knew he and Jack would never be able to keep that kind of secret for years...... Hell... at the rate they were going, they’d be lucky if they made it through the night without giving themselves away.

Troy and Rob piled out of the big truck, dressed in their usual faded Levi’s and golf shirts, laughing, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. They greeted Max loudly when he charged out to sniff them over. Everyone gathered round to say hello when they finally made it to the porch, shaking hands and slapping backs all around.... even Jack got a slap, Ennis noticed. Ennis took their beer, handed a twelve pack to Jack and nodded towards the door. “Come on.... Let’s go put this on ice.” Jack took it and followed him through the kitchen to the deck.

“Which one is it?” Jack asked quietly as they put the beer in the giant tub. He needed to add another bag of ice.... there was some more in the storage room freezer.....

“Let’s get some ice......” Ennis told him, started walking towards the old garage in the back of the yard. Jack caught up with him quickly. No one else had made it out back yet, which was good, so they walked, undisturbed, through the lush spring grass to the ancient little building.

“It’s Josh...... We were roommates in college. We hook up sometimes when we’re both single, but I told him I’m not right now, and he’s cool with it.... ok?”

“Yeah, Ennis, it’s ok. I know you had a life before I got here, and I don’t have any right to make demands on you, but I just want you for myself while I’m here. I can’t help it.”

Ennis stopped at the door to flip the latch up, held Jack’s gaze for the few seconds it took him to get the door open. He let the door catch on a rock so light would come in, then led the way into the cool, musty building complete with dust and cobwebs and even a few resident creatures of the night..... The walls were stacked high with storage bins on one side, restaurant memorabilia on the other.... There was a large refrigerator and a deep freeze sitting on a concrete slab.

Ennis half expected Jack to touch him, to wrap his arms around him and push into him, but he didn’t. When Ennis turned around, Jack had his hands in his pockets, was looking hard at the concrete runners laid down eons ago to park on. Apparently it was his turn to talk.

“Is this thing between us working both ways, Jack?”

Jack looked up, but his eyes were still hidden beneath a thick cover of eyelashes. “What do you mean?”

Ennis walked up closer, till they were almost touching, stared hard into Jack’s eyes. “You want me all to yourself..... I just want to know if I’m getting you all to myself too.......”

Jack cocked one eyebrow at him, stepped in closer still, asked softly, “Is that what you want, Ennis? Not just some tit-for-tat bullshit, but is that what you really want..... to be my only lover.... the only one touchin’ me, fuckin’ me?”

Just hearin’ Jack say it sucked the air out of Ennis’ lungs....... seein’ the heat in Jack’s face, the lust in his eyes........ shit! Ennis could feel pure, hot need pourin’ into his cock, but they didn’t have time....... fuck!

“Ennis? I wanna hear you say it.......” Jack was moving even closer, hands reaching out for him.... Ennis could see their toes touching when he looked down, trying to catch his breath again......

“Yeah Jack, I want it to be just you and me,” Ennis admitted. As soon as the words hit the air, Jack grabbed him with strong, determined hands, push-walking him back fast till he slammed into the refrigerator. Ennis wrapped his arms around Jack’s straining body, pulled him flush against his front as he surrendered to the need to kiss him and hold him, to let go of his reserve and for once give Jack back as much as he was getting.

Jack opened his eyes then, great pools of liquid blue, and what Ennis saw there made him ache inside, because it was what he wanted so badly but knew he could never have, at least not for long. But maybe for the summer, because it seemed this wasn’t just a summer fuck after all.... from the look in those eyes, this was turning into a summer love affair.

Ennis cupped Jack’s jaw, tilted his head to study him close. “He’s my friend, Jack. I love a lot of my friends. But I’m not in love with him, if that’s what you mean.... and he’s not in love with me. Ok?”

Jack nodded, pressed one last hard kiss on his mouth. “Ok. Let’s get the ice before they come lookin' for us.”

Ennis nodded. He grabbed ice from the freezer, pointed at the restaurant equipment. “See all that.... that’s my collection of old restaurant stuff. It can be really fascinating if you’re into that kind of thing.”

Jack grinned. “Well I’m not real smart about that kinda stuff, but thanks for taking all this time to show it to me, anyway.”

Ennis grinned back, tossed him a bag of ice and started for the door. “No problem.” They walked slowly back to the party, carrying ice, talking about Jack’s day, willing their dicks down as fast as they’d wilt. Ennis wasn’t sure if he’d just imagined what he’d seen in Jack’s eyes or not, but he felt lighter on the inside regardless. Jack had promised to be his alone for the summer – that was plenty good enough for now.

Ennis was asleep before Jack had even left the bed Wednesday morning, didn’t budge until ten thirty, when Samson finally ran out of patience and started making biscuits on his naked chest. Ouch!! That got Ennis up in a hurry..... a little affection from those sharp claws went a long way.

A Little Something Extra - 13, Pt 3 - Watch This!

Ennis took the stairs slowly up to his room, listened for sounds of Jack leaving, or – hopefully – following him, but he didn’t hear either... it was quiet down below. The argument had chased away most of his drunk, and his mad was pretty well gone too. A Little Something Extra - 13, Pt 1 - Second Thoughts

Jack was thankful that the scene they were filming that morning didn’t require a lot of concentration on his part, because his head was definitely not in the game. All he could think about was Ennis and what was going on between them and how crazy it was making him. Jack wanted Ennis more than he’d ever wanted anyone, and the time they spent together was only making him more aware of how bad off he was. Even if they did manage to keep their affair a secret and he didn’t get outed to the whole fucking world..... if he and Ennis kept going like they were going, what would he have worth going back to when it was time to go home?

They hadn’t even spent a night together yet, just one day and a few hours over the last couple of weeks.... but those hours with him were the bright spots.... When he looked back on his time here in Memphis, the time he’d spent with Ennis was living.... all the rest was just time gotten through, waiting to see him again so he could be happy.

But he wasn’t happy, not really.... the situation was confusing the hell out of him. He just couldn’t accept that the career – the life - that he’d worked so hard to build for himself could so easily go down in flames because of a guy he barely even knew. How could Ennis have gotten that kind of hold over him so quickly? It just didn’t make any sense.

He wasn’t making any sense. Last night, he’d been so fucking pissed... but not because he was worried about important stuff, like his career or his future. He’d been pissed because Ennis was leaving him to go to a party with his friends. He couldn’t go, because he had to stay out of sight, but Ennis was going anyway, perfectly happy to go without him, and that had totally wigged him out. Here he was looking at the possible end of life as he knew it, and Ennis couldn't even ditch one stupid party to spend the night with him.

Even knowing he was being a dick, though, Jack couldn’t stop himself.... his emotions were like a freakin' freight train out of control. The whole situation had crawled all over him, piled up in a misery-making heap on top of all the other worries and anxieties brought on by their day together - their fucking awesome day together - and he’d made no effort to hide how unhappy he felt.

Ennis had picked up on his mood – no way to miss that - but he’d asked no questions and Jack had volunteered no apologies or explanations. Ennis had been wary and reserved at the end, walking on eggshells when he’d said goodbye... there’d been no kiss, no touching of any kind, and no plans for later. Just goodbye.

That had sucked.... left Jack feeling angry and disgusted with himself when his mad had finally worn off. This morning, he’d wanted to stop at Ennis’ house on the way in to work, say he was sorry for being such an asshole, touch him and kiss him and crawl in bed with him, but he’d kept driving instead.... didn’t need to be late.... wasn’t really sure about his welcome there anyway. They still hadn’t made any plans, but Ennis had seemed receptive when he’d said he’d see him later, so Jack decided to go with it. Later would be tonight - he’d be waiting on Ennis' doorstep when he got home from the restaurant. It was time to stop fucking around.

Ennis wanted to go back to sleep after Jack’s call, but he was in the minority about that issue. But then he’d eased up some, told him he could take his time, he wasn’t going anywhere. So maybe it wasn’t put out or get out time immediately, but it was out there now. Ennis stewed over it all morning.... while he and Max walked around the neighborhood, while he ran errands before going in to work. He took a break from his thoughts once he got to the restaurant - it was Tuesday, their first day back after being closed on Monday, so there was extra work to do to get things rolling. Fairly soon, though, everything seemed to be on automatic and Ennis found himself at his desk, twiddling his thumbs. When the phone rang around four, he answered it quickly.

“Lagniappes. This is Ennis. May I help you?”

“I hope so..... Hey Ennis – it’s Josh. How’s it goin’?”

Two hours later, Ennis parked his SUV in the parking lot of the East Memphis Hilton. After finishing up a couple of last minute chores in the office, he’d taken the night off, left John in charge of the restaurant. He’d stopped by his house to change clothes and see to the animals, then headed out east to Josh’s hotel. He'd checked his phone a couple of times, just in case Jack called, but he didn’t. Josh met him in the clubbish lobby of the expensive hotel. They’d been roommates in college... Grant had been jealous of their closeness, so he’d let the relationship go stale during that time, but that was no excuse for not picking it back up when he and Grant had gone their separate ways. But Josh had started dating Alan about that time... that had been the reason they’d not reestablished their connection, Ennis was pretty sure. The bartender brought more martinis – their third, maybe fourth...... whatever... Josh raised his glass, and Ennis clicked it with his... “To good friends......”

They drank some more, talking about life and the world and drugs and medicine....... Josh was extremely intense about his career, could go on and on about Medicare and the government. Ennis listened, was sympathetic to everyone’s plight, but he was mostly drunk by that point, and so was Josh, so he just nodded and said “Un – huh” to whatever Josh said. Around eight thirty, they went into the restaurant for dinner.

They ate.... salads and pasta..... nothing to write home about, but enough sustenance to absorb some of the alcohol, enough so that when Josh said, “Let’s go up to my room – I’ve got a bottle of shiraz for us to try,” Ennis couldn’t think of any reason to say no.

Josh’s room was nice – a suite – with a king-sized bed looming large off to the side of the comfortable sofa where they collapsed with the bottle of wine. Josh switched on a couple of low-wattage lamps, flicked on the tv but muted it immediately, then started in with more personal questions while he uncorked the wine. “So... are you seeing anybody? It’s been forever since you and Grant broke up – I can’t believe I’ve lost track of what’s going on with you.”

Ennis sipped the wine Josh had handed him, looked him straight in the eyes and said the only thing he could say........ “No.” If he said yes, there’d be a million questions, and Josh was too good of a friend to blow off with a pack of lies. One lie was about all he could stand.

Josh just smiled at his answer, said, “How come?”

“I don’t know... guess I’m just too picky these days....”

Josh had grinned, said he knew just what he meant...... They’d started talking about set-up’s and awful dates...... finally it had pinged in Ennis’ fuzzy brain what Josh was saying. “What the fuck, Josh? Are you dating now? What happened to Alan?”

So Josh had told him..... all about them falling apart, bit by bit, until they couldn’t stand it anymore and had pulled the plug on the whole thing. That had been about five months ago.

“Damn Josh... I’m sorry... I didn’t know........ Why didn’t you call me?” Josh had been one of the first people he’d called when he and Grant had broken up.... it hurt that Josh hadn’t felt the need to call him.

Josh watched him cautiously through thick eyelashes that reminded Ennis of Jack’s....... “’Cause I knew we’d hook up, and I wasn’t ready for that. You know I love you, Ennis. I couldn’t have handled seeing you then.”

Ennis sank down further into the soft cushions of the sofa, felt like he was getting sucked into the very fabric of the room. Josh had always said that he loved him, but Ennis had never taken him seriously, never thought it went beyond friendship anyway, and Josh had never pushed it. Tonight, the word seemed to hover over them in capital letters..... Ennis was vulnerable, craving love for the first time ever, in love with someone who had nothing to give, seeing in Josh a reprieve for his wounded heart. He took the last sip of his wine, tried to shake his head clear, but couldn’t. “What’re you sayin’?”

Josh sat his almost empty glass on the coffee table, eased up close to Ennis on the sofa, facing him. He took Ennis’ glass, sat it on the table next to his. When he turned back to Ennis, his soft brown eyes were full of emotion. He laid his hand, warm and intimate, on Ennis’ thigh. “I’m sayin’ I’m ready to get back into the game, Ennis, and I want you to get me started. I want you to make love with me.”

A Little Something Extra - Revelations - Part 2

Jack had an early call the next morning, was still barely awake when he got done with wardrobe and make-up. The last person he wanted to deal with was Chad, so, predictably, that was the one person who hounded him relentlessly till finally he caught up to him in a lonesome spot and demanded some attention. Jack gave in, decided it was best to just get it over with. He’d been really mad at first, but after everything that had happened with Ennis since then, Chad had drifted pretty low on his worry-meter. Chad was still dealing with it though, and Jack didn’t have the heart to blow him off anymore. He’d ignored fifteen calls and a note on his dressing room door. It was obvious the boy needed to get it off his chest.

Jack let himself be led outside to a private spot in the parking lot where they were going to shoot the first scene of the morning, didn’t say a word, left the talking to him. After a minute, Chad started in. “Why the fuck didn’t you return any of my calls?”

Jack just looked at him and laughed, watched his face turn red with embarrassment and impotent anger. He was junior in every way in this exchange, didn’t have a leg to stand on and he knew it. Where the fuck was this attitude coming from? “Bad start, Chad... Try again.” Jack sipped his coffee, staring off into the distance, watching the river rolling along, the huge barge floating down it looking small and vulnerable as it battled the swirling under currents.

Chad’s face was twisted up into a pissed off pout, which Jack could give a shit about.... He’d driven by Ennis’ house on his way into work, but it was freaking early as hell and it had been all dark and closed up. He’d almost stopped anyway, but had managed to keep going, thankful that Ennis’ SUV had been the only car in the driveway. He knew he wasn’t making any sense, was as confused as Ennis about what he wanted, but what the fuck could he do? His life dictated one thing, his body and his heart demanded the total opposite. It was a majorly fucked up situation.

“Ok, fine! I’m sorry!” Chad sputtered finally. “I lost it... I was totally out of line, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.... what I did was completely wrong - will you please forgive me?!?!?!?!?”

That was a better, melodramatic and over-the-top, but appropriate for what he’d done. Jack continued to stare off into the distance for another minute, finally favored Chad with a disgusted glance. “What the fuck were you thinking anyway?”

Chad apparently thought he really wanted to know, because his face crumpled up into an even more pitiful expression and he started pouring his heart out. “I don’t know... I was just drunk and horny and you were there and I know you like to get fucked and I just wanted to so bad....”

What? Jack turned on him angrily, got close up in his face. “What the fuck did you just say?? Jesus Christ! What makes you think I wanted to get fucked? Where the hell did you come up with that?”

“Well hell, Jack, everybody knows you’re a bottom.... All us guys wanna do you.... I was just really hopin’, you know.... since I’m working with you and all, that I’d get lucky....”

“Get lucky......? Jesus, Chad! What guys? Who the fuck are you talking about?” Jack had gone from disdain to dismay pretty quick.... He knew some people knew about him... there was no way to keep it totally secret unless you either gave up sex completely or arranged for a natural-looking death for all of your ex-lovers... something he wasn’t quite up for... Still, who the fuck was everybody? Was there a whole pack of guys wantin’ to fuck him? “Who is everybody?”

“Just my homies.... you know.... Get it.... my homies???” Chad grinned, young and stupid even in the face of his hostility and all the shit he was giving him.

Suddenly the scene shifted and Jack saw, just for an instant, a younger version of himself.... young and naive and new on the scene in every way.... trying to figure out what the hell was going on in his life, trying to make a place for himself. It wasn’t Chad’s fault that he was so paranoid about a secret that wasn’t really a secret at all..... People knew. Christine knew, some of the directors and producers knew.... but as long as everybody didn’t know.... as long as it wasn’t out there in the public eye, they could ignore it, and he could stay on track as an up and coming Hollywood heavyweight. Once it made the cover of People Magazine, everything would be different.

Jack backed off a bit, studied Chad, reading his face, seeing nothing there but an innocent mix of hope and confusion. He remembered how hard it had been for him, just getting started, getting his first big break, battling with feelings that could take it all away before he even got his first real taste. He could’ve really used a friend back in those days........ Shit!

“What the fuck do you want from me, Chad?”

Chad started blushing, but he moved in closer, trying to act like he knew what he was doing. “I thought I made that pretty clear the other morning, Jack. I wanna do you.”

Jack backed away, clamped down on his temper, laughed instead. “And I thought I made it pretty fucking clear that that wasn’t happening. Just get it out of your head. I don’t do people I’m working with, and I sure don’t do virgins!”

Chad backed up a step too, looking anxious. “What makes you think I’m a virgin, man?”

Jack cocked his head, grinned. “Total fucking lack of technique?”

Chad held his gaze for a few seconds, face blazing, then looked away, dropped his eyes to the asphalt, mumbled. “Sorry.... I guess I got a little carried away....”

Jack moved in on him aggressively, bopped his shoulder with the palm of his hand. “A little? Try a lot! You weren’t even gonna use a fucking condom, Chad! You don’t do that shit, man! Not ever! You’ll get your damn self sick that way, and all for what? Some hump you won’t even remember six months from now?” Jack had taken a lot of stupid chances when he was younger, looked back on his early years with fear and disgust for how reckless he’d been..... This was something he felt really strongly about. If he couldn’t help Chad in any other way, he wanted to get this message across.

“I know, I know... I’m sorry! But I wouldn’t’ve made you sick.... I promise, Jack. I don’t have anything.... I mean, it’s like you said, I haven’t actually gotten to do anything yet... I was hoping to do it here, while we’re in Memphis, you know.... away from home.... see what it was like...” Chad explained, toeing the ground, miserable, all his enthusiasm sucked away by Jack’s fierce lecture.

Jack eased off, took another sip of his now cold coffee. “Why haven’t you done it with one of your homies, huh? Sounds like they might be good to experiment on.”

“I don’t want them to know, you know.... that I’m new.... I figured I’d get some experience out here, then when I go back I can do whatever.... nobody’ll know.”

Jack could sympathize.... No guy wanted to be caught short in the sack, not even a brand new queer boy, but he wasn’t about to start giving lessons with his ass, especially not when he already had something really good going on back there....... mmmmmmmmm. Driving by Ennis’ house this morning without stopping had been so fucking hard.......

Jack looked at his watch. It was almost eight, way to early to call him.... Shooting should’ve already gotten started but the directors were having a meeting or some shit and they weren’t ready yet... he still had a few minutes free. He pulled his phone out of his pocket, stomach twitching just thinking about talking to him..... God, he was bad off. “I’ll make a call, see if maybe there’s somebody out there who’s really desperate, but don’t get your hopes up.” He hit the button for Ennis, looking Chad over while he waited for the ringing to start. Jack laughed. “First things first, huh? It’s fine, thanks for asking.”

“That’s good...”

“So how was the party last night?”

“It was all right.... anniversary thing for these guys who’ve been together for a few years now. It was nice, I guess.”

“Was Melissa there?”

“More questions?”

“What do you think?”

“So what’d you tell her?”

“The truth mostly..... that we’re just gonna be hittin’ it for a little while and I didn’t want to have to deal with a bunch of questions about something that wasn’t gonna last long enough to talk about. She understood. I left you out of it - don’t worry.”

“Then why do you care what I told her? What difference does it make?”

He put his back to Chad, asked, “How come... what’re you hiding from me?”

“Nothing you need to worry about. You know everything you need to know.... You’re safe, and I’ll keep your secrets...... It’s all good, Jack.”

“Mmmmm....” He wanted to pursue it, but what could he say? Chad was watching close, cocked his head, anxious about his prospects. Jack cleared his throat. “Kinda need a favor...”

“Shoot.”

Chad nodded happily, but made no move to leave until Jack shooed him away. “Go see what’s going on. Call me if they’re ready for me.” He watched until Chad was halfway across the wide parking lot, then turned back to watch the river and talk to Ennis. “So.... where were we?”

“You were talking in code, remember? I don’t have the faintest idea....”

But he was, and they both knew it.... It was there between them already, the awareness of time slipping away so fast... Before they even got all their kinks worked out, it’d be time for him to leave. He had no choice.... this was his life.

Jack heard the click on his phone which told him another call was coming in. He looked... Chad. “Damn... I gotta go in just a minute. They’re ready for me,” he said, turned from the river view and started walking towards the set.

“’K.... So who’s the virgin that’s gonna fuck this guy I’m supposed to be looking for, assuming I can come up with somebody?”

“Chad. He was the young guy at dinner the other night.”

“The guy that tried to fucking rape you this weekend?” Ennis didn’t sound so friendly anymore.

“Yeah, but he wasn’t really trying to rape me, he just got carried away.... you know how it is....... and he said he’s sorry. He’s just young and stupid, didn’t know what the fuck he was doing. I feel kinda sorry for him, thought maybe we could help him out.”

“All right, if you say so. I’ll see what I can come up with.”

Jack had reached the perimeter of activity. It was time to go. “Ok, thanks Ennis - he’s all excited. I gotta get to work now.... See you later?”

“You bet. You know where to find me.”

A Little Something Extra - 12 - Revelations - Part 1

Ennis showered and dressed, took his food to the party, but hung around on the edges as much as possible. He wasn’t feeling very sociable, for sure not in the mood for a lot of idle chit chat and nosy questions. The party was a five year togetherness party for a couple of guys that seemed to have beaten the odds and found a relationship that could survive all the bullshit of everyday life. Ennis was happy for them, but this kind of event made folks ever more curious than ever about the single people, and he didn’t want to get interviewed tonight, of all nights.

His day with Jack had ended on a flat note.... Once the sex was over, Jack seemed to draw back into himself. He was hungry, so Ennis had fixed him a plate – a pimento cheese sandwich, a couple of slices of the pork tenderloin he’d grilled and more of the slaw they’d had at lunch.... and a beer. Jack ate his dinner sitting at the island while Ennis made sandwiches for the party and cooked frozen biscuits to go with the pork. They didn’t talk much at all, and when Jack was done eating, he was ready to go. He said thanks for everything , whatever that meant, set his dishes in the sink and headed for the door. Ennis followed him slowly, keeping his distance, figured whatever issue Jack was fighting with probably wouldn’t get any clearer with his interference.

So they parted not so differently from the way they’d come together hours earlier - awkward and uncertain, no smiles, no affection.... now even their passion spent and cold. No mention was made of what they’d done, and they made no plans to see each other again. It was depressing as hell, but what could he do? It was Jack’s call.

Melissa gave him some room, for a while at least, and since he stayed mostly in the shadows, no one else picked up on his mood. By the time Melissa cornered him later in the evening, he’d had several glasses of wine and had passed through the worst of his sadness, was now considering his other option of being pissed off. Who the fuck did Jack think he was that he could just come and go as he pleased and act like he was the only one with any stake in this? The problem was, Jack really was somebody, and although Ennis didn’t care squat about his money or his fame, Jack still had it and Ennis didn’t, which left him feeling like he had no leverage at all.

Melissa plopped down next to him on the bench, gave him a friendly pat on the leg. “You’ve been awfully quiet tonight. Were you able to save it, or did he stomp off in a huff?”

Ennis was sitting on a bench on the deck, elbows on his knees, half empty glass of wine dangling between them. He shook his head, staring off into the near darkness of the back yard. “You know, I don’t know what the fuck is going on. I might see him again.... I might not. It’s his call.”

She was watching him in that witchy way she had that told him she was just a few steps away from reading his mind. “And you care, don’t you? All that bullshit about how he’s just a fuck was a lie, wasn’t it?”

Shit! Women were such a pain in the ass when it came to this kind of thing, never satisfied till they had your insides spread out like a fucking newspaper, the whole sordid story laid out for them to read. “Maybe.... Ok? Maybe I do care, but it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference... He’s in the driver’s seat in this one.... I just have to wait and see what he does next.”

“Was he pissed?”

“Mmmm.... maybe.... I don’t really know.... He’s hard to read....”

“Did you tell him you didn’t mean it?”

“I think maybe he knew.... but he’s not looking for anything real, so he’s ok with it just being sex. That’s really all he wants anyway... I don’t know why he got so pissed about it.”

“So why’d you even tell me all that if it’s not true? You can tell me when you really like somebody, Ennis. I’m not gonna run tell the world if it’s a secret.”

Ennis knew that... they’d been keeping each others secrets for a long time. He couldn’t tell her about Jack, though, because that wasn’t his secret to tell, but she was on to him too much to keep going with the other story. He’d just tell her the truth, leave Jack’s name out of it. He sipped his wine, thought about it for a few more seconds.... it was as good a plan as any. “Yeah, I do care about him.... probably too much.... but the rest was true, Melissa. He’s just in it for sex. I knew that going in, and I’m ok with it. I want to keep it quiet because it won’t last for long and it’s never gonna be any more than what it is right now. If people know I’m seeing somebody, they’ll start asking questions, and I just don’t want to deal with it. There’s no point, you know?”

“How do you know it won’t last for long? He’s not sick or anything is he?” she asked, sounding anxious all of a sudden.

“No, he’s not,” Ennis said, but he didn’t know for sure, because he hadn’t asked, had just assumed he was healthy. They hadn’t asked any questions like that.... He’d used a condom anyway, because he always did, so it wasn’t that big a deal as far as him catching something was concerned... but still, if they got together again, he was going to ask him, just so he could put that worry to bed. He thought of Jack, beautiful and healthy, and the thought of him being sick sucked his breath away. He knew that he’d have to give him up, sooner or later, to go back to his life... That was bad enough, but at least he’d still be able to watch him in movies and read about him in magazines. If something happened and he wasn’t in the world anymore.... well, that just didn’t bear thinking about.

Melissa asked him a few more questions, but could read him well, knew he didn’t want to talk about it anymore, so she gave up, let him off the hook. “Ok, I get the message.... I’ll leave you alone, babe. Just don’t forget you can talk to me... ok? Whenever you need to....”

He nodded, and she left him with a kiss on the cheek. She was a good friend... At one time he’d thought she might be more, might be the one to save him from his curse, but as hard as they’d tried, their love had never bloomed beyond friendship, never lit the fires of passion in his heart and his belly. They’d given it their best shot, parted as friends after long months of wanting what they couldn’t have. She was the last woman he’d been with, the end of an era for him.

Ennis went home shortly after eleven, poured himself a last glass of wine while explaining to Max that he could do without a walk for one night. Kibbles dispensed, Ennis took his glass of wine and headed for the stairs, but when he got there, he realized he didn’t want to go up. His room was empty in a way it had never been empty before, and he just wasn’t up to dealing with that tonight. Tomorrow was another day.

Instead, he shucked off his jeans and curled up on his almost new and hardly used sofa, pulled the soft throw down over him. Samson curled up in the spot behind his legs... Max settled down on the area rug by the coffee table. Ennis clicked on the television, sipped his wine while watching the last hour of a Texas Hold’em tournament.... Gus Hansen won... Gus was his favorite player... totally doable.... Ennis went to sleep dreaming that Jack and Gus were both drinking at his bar, both flirting with him.... he could have his pick....... Fuck! It was a dream.... why not have both?
